Addicted.

When we get back to the room, Kai, Tucker, and Levi are all waiting there, anxiously. As soon as Mateo tells them that they are going to teach me to fight, I swear all three of them wear a matching smirk. I ask Kai about it, and he just tells me that I could talk Mateo into anything. Which I doubt. Mateo merely understands now why it’s important to me.

I’m surprised that I’m hungry when we head to dinner. Since the guys found out that my pride was basically starving me, they’ve made it their mission to force feed me until I’m so stuffed I can barely move.

When Tucker carries a huge platter of burgers and fries to the table, I suck in a surprised breath. I feel like he has enough food to feed the entire dining hall. But then again, I’m pretty sure I saw Mateo eat six burgers yesterday like it was nothing, and then still go back for dessert.

I’ve never been able to shift without fainting afterward. And I know that’s not normal. Not even close. But I wonder what it will be like to shift into my panther and feel invigorated when I shift back.

Soon, I will know.

I ignore the stares that I get from my pride. Them taunting me is just my lot in life, and I should just accept it for now. One more year and I won’t have to put up with them anymore.

If Mateo wins.

He has to.

I told Mateo earlier that I trusted him to protect me, and that is still true. I have to trust him, even though I’m scared.

Kai, who is sitting to my right, shakes his head. “Shifters eat so much.”

Levi shrugs, grabbing a burger from the pile. He stuffs half of it in his mouth.

I’m mated to animals, quite literally.

He sees me watching him. “What?” he asks around a mouth full of food.

Kai and I both bust out laughing.

I grab a burger from the pile, eating it like a normal person. Meanwhile, Mateo is already on burger number two before I take my second bite.

I watch in amazement as the pile of food slowly dwindles. I didn’t think we were going to be able to eat it all, but I think we might.

“Eat another.” Levi puts a burger on my plate as I finish up the first one.

I groan, putting a hand to my stomach. “I’m so full.”

But I take a bite anyway.

In my mind, I know this is right. I know I should be eating more. I’m not getting near enough calories. But knowing doesn’t help the fact that my stomach just isn’t accustomed to eating so much food.

As I’m eating dinner, a boy approaches our table. I can smell that he’s a wolf.

“Hey, Tucker. What’s up?”

The boy looks about our age, probably eighteen. And he’s smiling at Tucker, so I’m hoping that it’s a good thing that he’s here. Maybe this is Tucker’s friend.

“Hey.” Tucker nods. “What’s going on?”

“The pack is having a party tonight, if you want to come.
